Bird Friendly Coffee is coffee that comes from farms in Latin America that
provide good forest like habitat for birds. "Its made in the
Shade" is a saying that aptly describes Bird Friendly coffee because
typically the coffee plants are grown under large shade trees. The shade
trees provide habitat for the birds.
Much coffee is grown on land that was clear cut. Not to our (Kaffe
Magnum Opus that is) liking, but, reality. Bird Friendly Coffees are
planted under a canopy of trees. Because of the shaded, forest like
setting created by these canopy trees, coffee produced this way is called
"shade grown". Not only are Bird Friendly Coffees shade grown,
they are also organic, meaning they are grown without the use of chemical
pesticides which poison the environment.
And this means the land provide a Sustainable Harvest Coffee (for more on

Kaffe Magnum Opus is Certified Bird Friendly by the Smithsonian
Institute.
These coffees are the only coffees on the market that are certified as
shade-grown and organic by an independent third-party inspector using criteria
established by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center of the national Zoo.
These criteria are based on years of scientific research. Kaffe Magnum
Opus contributes 25 cents per pound to support Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center
research and conservation programs. Top
Bird Friendly Coffee is both shade grown and organic. Other coffee is
grown on land where the canopy of trees have been removed and the coffee plants
grow under full sun. (Not all are grown this way. Many are on the
sides of Mountains - the shady side of the mountain for example.) The Sun
Coffee farms provide little habitat for birds and if they are not organic, use
chemicals to support the growth of the coffee plants. Top

Shade brown beans ripen more slowly than those grown in full
sun. They therefore may acquire richer flavor than sun grown
coffees. Top
